Jamaica Launches My Heartbeats Ja Wedding Microsite

Jamaica, recently named ‘World’s Leading Wedding Destination’ at the World Travel Awards, has launched a Wedding and Romance microsite, aptly named My Heart Beats JA. Housed in the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) website, the microsite is a repository of all things love, providing solutions and options for anyone on the romance journey under the categories: Romantic Getaways, Getting Engaged and I Do. Content across the microsite addresses consumer trends, including more intimate or even private destination weddings, and a growing number of couples identifying and seeking opportunities for romantic escapes. Jamaica is strategically aligned to meet those needs, capitalizing on the $300 billion global wedding industry through customizable experiences that come to life through the new site.

“My Heart Beats JA is a fulfillment of a promise the Jamaica Tourist Board made to continue to evolve the VisitJamaica platform into an ecosystem of all opportunities for tourism in Jamaica. It gives us a great feeling that we have been able to, not just keep our promise, but more importantly, remain true to the objectives we have set for our digital focus,” remarked Jamaica’s Director of Tourism, Donovan White at the COVID-safe launch event that was held at the AC Hotel by Marriott in Kingston.

Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett stated in the keynote, “Jamaica is a place for love, for lovers, for romance and the romantic. Of the over 700 stopover arrivals to the island from January to November last year, 58% of that number represented visitors travelling for weddings and honeymoon. This tells me that Jamaica is truly the heartbeat of the world as it continues to pull and pique the interest of visitors searching for unique experiences.”

Partners are poised to benefit from this heightened focus on weddings and romance as the architecture of the site gives opportunities for all licensed vendors and suppliers within the space to be represented. Users who enter the site are within three clicks of a live person representing supplies including places to stay, cake vendors, photographers or trip planners.

Wendy, a real wedding concierge, adds another personal and human touch to the site navigation. Site visitors will have personalized one-on-one engagement with Wendy through the site, or on Twitter, as she provides information and offering ideas to meeting discerning tastes.

The Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) Rolls Out “Safe for Travel” Plan

The Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) has launched a new marketing messaging tied to its revamped inspection process due to COVID-19 titled “Safe for Travel” that sees the tourism body, given the authority by the National COVID-19 Task Force, to assess tourism businesses to ensure they are operating within the National COVID-19 Gazetted Safety Measures and in a position to welcome the return of domestic and international travel. The objective of the scheme is to protect the areas most affected and vulnerable to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as ensure that the health and safety of the traveller is always front-of-mind as the destination reopens to tourism.

In response to coronavirus, the Government of Guyana cancelled all international passenger flights beginning 18 March 2020, however the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority has since launched a phased re-opening approach. Details of which are as follows:

  • Phase 1 – 18 March – 11 October 2020: Repatriation flights.
  • Phase 2 – 12 October 2020: Limited incoming commercial flights for Guyanese citizens, permanent residents, international travellers, international workers and diplomats.
  • Phase 3 – November 2020 (in place as of January 2021): Expansion of incoming commercial flights that allow foreign nationals and international travellers to enter Guyana.
  • Phase 4 – TBC: Expansion of inbound and outbound flights to provide more service for inbound and outbound tourists.

As of January 2021, this reopening is currently in phase three which has seen the expansion of commercial flights that now allow foreign nationals and international travellers to enter Guyana. With this comes risk that the virus could spread from visitors to some of Guyana’s most vulnerable communities in a country that has seen relatively low case rates throughout the pandemic.

To protect these communities and the general population, travellers to Guyana are required to present a negative PCR test from an accredited lab. Negative tests from within 72 hours of arrival will be allowed to pass through the airport. However, if the PCR test is done within four to seven days of travel, the passenger will be required to do another PCR test upon arrival in Guyana and present a negative test. It should be noted that if a passenger is required to take a test in Guyana, it will come at their expense at a cost of GY$16,000 (approx. £56). More information on travelling to Guyana is available at www.guyanatravel.gy.

The ‘Safe For Travel’ scheme has been put in place as a further measure to protect the Guyanese population, including vulnerable communities, and travellers alike. Tourism businesses are assessed in a two-step procedure. First, they must submit their Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) detailing how the business has adjusted its practices and adopted new measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Once the SOP has been submitted, the GTA will carry out an inspection on the business to ensure they are meeting the criteria as follows:

  1. Signage (hand wash, mask wearing and social distancing)
  2. Temperature Monitoring (calibrated thermometer temperature checks)
  3. Sanitisation – practices and products in use
  4. Staff Safety
  5. Guest Safety
  6. Monitoring – how the business plans to monitor the effectiveness of its SOP

A full list of tourism business and areas ‘Safe For Travel’ is available here.

In addition to these newer measures, the GTA was able to provide COVID-19 Support Packages to indigenous communities tied to the tourism value chain earlier in the pandemic. Communities that are actively in the tourism licensing process and working with the GTA benefited from a package that included recommended Ecolab cleaning and sanitation products, infrared thermometers, cloth and sewing supplies for creating masks, knapsack sprayers to disinfect buildings and luggage etc, and signage on COVID-19. For communities not actively involved in tourism, the packages included sanitation products, cloth and sewing supplies for creating masks and signage on COVID-19. The support packages were delivered with a training session done by Ecolab and Ministry of Health representatives as well as the GTA.

First Batch of COVID-19 Vaccine Successfully Administered in the TCI

Following the launch of the TCI’s COVID-19 Vaccination program on January 11, 2021 the TCI can proudly state that it has efficiently administered its first batch of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The Turks and Caicos Islands on Thursday, January 11, 2021 received compliments of the United Kingdom, its first batch of 1,950 vials of the Pfizer–BioNTech COVID 19 vaccine; enough to fully vaccinate some 5,000 plus persons.

Vaccinations commenced on January 11, 2020 with country leaders and representatives from key groups across society, focusing largely on the elderly, persons with underlying conditions, healthcare, and front-line workers across the islands.

As of Thursday, February 4, 2021 a total of 6,114 persons had received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

This includes 5,351 persons on the island of Providenciales, 452 persons on the island of Grand Turk, 142 persons on Parrot Cay, 87 persons on South Caicos, and 82 persons on the island of North Caicos. Vaccinations will take place on the island of Salt Cay on Friday, February 5, 2021.

The Government’s Primary Healthcare Clinic, which is responsible for vaccinating over 2,000 persons, began administration of the second dose of the vaccine on Monday, February 1st, 2021; 233 persons in the TCI have since been fully immunized.

The Turks and Caicos Islands Government entered a MOU with the 5 on island private medical practices: Family Medical, Grace Bay Medical, Associated Medical Practice, Omnicare, and Carolina Medical on Thursday, January 21, 2021 to cover the cost of administering the vaccine to members of the public free of charge.

This partnership is responsible for 2/3 of the vaccinations in the TCI thus far; helping the TCI to expeditiously reach its goal of vaccinating over 5,000 persons within less than a month of launching its COVID-19 vaccination program.

Commenting on the successful administration of the first batch of COVID-19 vaccines in the TCI His Excellency Governor Nigel Dakin said; “We have delivered the first batch at higher speed than originally planned or expected – there has been absolutely no wastage – and we have now demonstrated that there is demand for a voluntary vaccination program across all the Islands touching all communities of our society.

That efficiency, demand and delivery were not a given when the vaccine first arrived, and it secures us more which I expect to arrive in mid-February.

Keep registering on the portal and if you have received your first shot, return at the 21-day point for your second.

Over 10% of TCI will be immune imminently and moving towards a proper herd immunity is our route out of this so be reassured moving forward we will secure as many vaccines as there is demand for it; we’ve shown we can manage this better than anyone originally imagined.”

Premier Honourable Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson in expressing her pleasure at the success of the program said; “I am very pleased that we have been able to vaccinate so many persons in such a short time.

I must thank those who worked across Government to deliver on this, particularly our Primary Health Care Team. I must also thank all of the Private Clinics who came on board to assist TCIG in delivering on this important national goal.

This is an important achievement which demonstrates to the UK that this gesture has been very welcomed. As we welcome the next batch, I encourage the vulnerable among us and frontline workers to continue to come forward.

This vaccine remains all of our best defenses and best chance at some form of normalcy during the life of this pandemic. I also wish to encourage all of our residents to continue to register as we seek to achieve our ambitious goal of vaccinating our entire adult population.

We continue as a Government to run an aggressive education campaign and so I encourage persons to read-only credible sources of information and follow your doctor’s advice.

As we continue to face the challenges of COVID, I encourage us all to follow health’s protocols and exercise even greater vigilance.”

Commenting on the initial rollout and the future of the program, Deputy Governor and Co-Chair of the TCI COVID-19 Vaccination Oversight Steering Committee Her Excellency Anya Williams said; “We are extremely pleased with the initial rollout of our COVID-19 Vaccination Program here in the Turks and Caicos and extend our thanks to the many persons involved in its success.

This includes; Primary Healthcare and Private Medical Practitioners team that did an exceptional job at administering such a large number of vaccines within a relatively short period of time; our Comms Team that did an amazing job educating the public on the pros and cons of taking the vaccine; our logistics team that led on planning, receipt, storage and distribution of the vaccine; our public and private sector partners that served as members of the TCI COVID-19 Vaccination Oversight Steering Committee; our entire team in the Ministry of Health and the general public for your great support!

We initially received from the UK 1,950 vials to fully vaccinate 5,000 persons.
Similar to Cayman and other countries, we were able to extract 6 doses from the majority of the vials, allowing us to administer additional vaccines with little to no wastage due to consistent demand. We had great support for vaccinations from our healthcare workers where over 50% of staff and their families were vaccinated.

Frontline areas such as the Police, Prison, Immigration and Customs were also prioritized along within vulnerable and other persons with underlying conditions.
Appointments for first vaccines across the islands is currently closed. However, as stated by the Governor, we are actively working on the receipt of the next batch of vaccines from the UK which we anticipate later this month.

We, therefore, encourage persons to continue to register on the portal so that you can be scheduled for early appointments once the second batch of vaccines arrives on the island.

We are still actively engaged in the fight against COVID-19, but the completion of over 6,000 vaccines thus far is a major accomplishment for us in our plan to fully vaccinated, where supported, our entire population.”

BRADES, Montserrat – February 3, 2021 – The pristine Caribbean island of Montserrat joins the global marketplace of destinations courting home-based professionals, with the announcement of the Montserrat Remote Workers Stamp. “The global pandemic has changed how we live and work, and as multinationals and leading startups across the world accelerate their rates of digital adoption, the need to be physically present to fulfill professional responsibilities has been redefined,” explained Montserrat’s Deputy Premier Dr. Hon. Samuel Joseph explained. “We know there are people in various parts of the world who now have the ability to work from home and are actively looking for a change of environment. The remote worker programme is not only inviting but encouraging them to come to Montserrat to work and at the same time be more than a visitor but a part of the community on one of the world’s most unique destinations.”
